KILIMANJARO TREK - MACHAME ROUTE.

Climbing Kilimanjaro on the Macheme route is a more natural climb in comparison to the Marangu Route, which has been modified to make an easier path.

The Machame Route is more demanding, much quieter and scenic route but makes climbing Kilimanjaro all the more rewarding. Overnights are spent camping in tents, which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters. Highlights of this route are the Shira Plateau, Barranco wall and the Karanga Valley reaching the summit via Stella Point.

Because this route is more taxing it is recommended that climbers should be physically fit.

LOT - 08 - 6 Days/5 Nights - MACHAME TREK.

DAY 1: Machame Hut.
You are transferred to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame for the first section of the climb. Climbing Kilimanjaro begins here where you will walk through the lush rainforest to the Machame Hut to about 3000 m for your overnight camping. (5-7 hours)

DAY 2: Shira Hut.
After breakfast and an early start, you take a morning walk up a steep ridge, passing through heather and open moorland. Enjoy the views and scenery until crossing a large gorge to reach Shira Hut where you shall overnight. This walk takes about 5-7 hours taking you to a height of 3800 m.

DAY 3: Barranco Hut.
Heading eastwards towards Kibo, you will cross a broad valley and continue climbing to a ridge crest. Enjoy the views, take a break and then cross to Scree slopes and a river valley before reaching Kilimanjaro Barranco Campsite. This will take about 5-7 hours at a height of 3900 m where you will spend the night.

DAY 4: Barafu Hut.
The path climbs steeply out of the Barranco Valley, crosses the Karanga River which is the last water point on this route climbing Kilimanjaro. This is a steep climb over rocky slabs to Barafu Campsite to your overnight camping site at a height of 4600 m. This has stunning views of the icefields. Before you fall asleep, know you are nearly there.

DAY 5: Mweka Hut.
After breakfast you have to start climbing early to reach the crater rim at Stella Point in time for sunrise. After taking in the amazing view you then walk to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. (6-7 hours, 5896 m) From here you will descend via Barafu Campsite through the forest to Mweka Campsite to stay overnight and relax after a long, but well worth climb. (5-7 hours, 3000 m).

DAY - 4 - Arrow Glacier - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut.
Depart early morning (between 12.30 am and 01.00 am) for the Summit. In case of a heavy snow fall (sometimes occurs during the dry season) it is advised to abandon this part of the trek for it shall require a technical climbing experience and tools. In fact this part also calls for a serious trekker even under normal conditions due to the steepness of the path. In such a case therefore a retrace to Barranco Hut and making it to the peak through Marangu route is necessary. Under good weather, Uhuru Peak 5895m is reached at sunrise. Descend to Horombo hut on Marangu route for overnight.

DAY - 5 -Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - 14km 5/7 hrs.
Descend pleasantly to Marangu through moor land, heather and forests to the gate. Transfer to your overnight hotel in town.

Mount Meru Guided Trek.
Mt. Meru is Tanzania's second highest peak and the fifth highest on the African continent. At 14,979 ft. this dormant volcano dominates the Arusha skyline. A quarter of a million years ago it erupted, causing the entire eastern wall to be blown away.

Over 400 species of birds, and wildlife including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, baboon, warthog, black and white colobus monkey and duiker, this area offers. We have chosen the more scenic route up the mountain along the way we'll pass through Meru Crater, within which are the sacred forest groves where the local Meru people used to perform rain-making ceremonies. We'll continue up to the saddle below Little Meru Peak (12,538 ft.). Finally we reach the rim, a barren ridge, which we circumnavigate to the summit point. No technical expertise is required. This climb is considered as a Prelude to Your Kilimanjaro Trek.

LOT - 10 - 3 Nights/4 Days - Mt. Meru - Miriakamba Trail:

DAY -1: Momella Gate/Miriakamba Hut. 10km - 3-5hrs.

Today we depart Arusha at around 8:00am to Momella gate. After completing the administrative formalities and meeting with the porters and ranger, we will commence the 4-5 hour walk to Miriakamba Hut. The uphill trek will take us through the forest, past the fig tree arch up to the Itikoni clearing where there are likely to be buffalo grazing. We will then walk on and cross a large stream just above the Maio water falls. Another 2 hours of trekking should bring us to Miriakamba at 2514m. above sea level. Dinner then retire for the night.

DAY -2: Miriakamba Hut/Saddle Hut - 4km. 2- 3 hrs.
Take the uphill path through beautiful glades between trees to reach Mgongo wa Tembo. Views of the Meru Crater from this point are spectacular. Kilimanjaro is seen beautifully sitting on the Eastern horizon on clear days. From here the path steeps through grassy tracks up to the Saddle Hut - at 3570m. above sea level. Overnight.

DAY - 3: Saddle Hut/Summit/Momella Gate. 5km.- 4 - 5 hrs.
Early morning start for the summit, between 1a.m. and 2 a.m. The path leads to the summit through a very narrow ridge between the outer wall of the Meru Crater and cliffs of the inner wall.
